Area: Snow Canyon State Park, Utah

Scenery: Snow Canyon's Navajo Sandstone cliffs along eastern front of the Red Mountains. A portion of the Navajo Petrified Dunes is in the foreground. The term ‘petrified’ used by the State Park Service is actually a misnomer, for petrified refers to organic matter being replaced by a fluid/mineral, usually siliceous in nature. A better name for this dune field would be ‘Lithified Dunes’. Remnants of younger basaltic lava flows in foreground.
